POSITION SUMMARY

The Mountain Bike Instructor is primarily responsible for coaching and guiding downhill mountain biking lessons to the guests of Stratton Mountain Resort. Lessons are taught using similar methodologies to the Professional Ski Instructors of America/American Associate of Snowboard Instructors. Instructors will create a safe, fun, and positive learning environment that is catered to the needs of our guests. This is a part time summer seasonal position that pays between $20.00 - $28.00 per hour DOE.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Maintains morning presence in the Bike Shop to greet and talk with guests, provide bike park information and updates, answer questions and inform riders of the instructional program options available to them.
  • Meet assigned riders / groups at meeting area at the meeting time to start the session
  • Conduct lessons / programs in accordance with Stratton Bike Park training guidelines.
  • Acts as an ambassador at all times within the Bike Park, offering assistance, information, and guidance to riders.


  • Maintain awareness of all areas of the bike park for potential hazards including but not limited to downed trees, limbs and branches, missing or damaged signage, soil or rock erosion, feature damage or degradation and reports any concerns to the Mountain Bike Manager.
  • Will be required on occasion to assist with other bike park operations or events when called upon to do so.
  • Assist bike patrol with daily opening and closing trail sweeps.
  • Upholding the highest levels of guest safety on varied terrain with constantly changing weather conditions.
  • Assisting guests with transportation of equipment.


  • Assisting guests to load and unload the chairlift.
  • Participate in required trainings and orientation.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education:
  • High school diploma in process or completed, preferred
  • PSIA/AASI, PMBI or ICP affiliation, preferred


Experience:

  • Experience working with guests of all ages, preferred
  • Must be fluent in all aspects of the English language (spoken and written), required.
  • Must have excellent guest service skills, required.


  • Must have excellent communication skills, required.
  • Must work well in a team environment, required.
  • Must have sight, speech, and hearing abilities sufficient to learn skills, follow and provide directions, required.
  • Previous experience with teaching/coaching/mentoring children, preferred.


QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS

Must be comfortable navigating blue terrain on a mountain bike at a resort. Current PMBI/ICP membership is preferred. Basic knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and browser applications; basic Internet navigation is required.

All Instructor applicants should provide a letter of reference and submit a resume in order to be considered for a position. Letters of reference should pertain to the applicant's previous experience with teaching/coaching/mentoring, whenever possible. Stratton Mountain Resort will also conduct reference checks for all candidates being considered for employment and a criminal background check for all candidates who have been offered a position in our Mountain Sports School.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

This position will require work during weekends and holidays.

Mountain Environment:

  • The primary physical environment in which this position works is out of doors with a high exposure level to heat, cold, wind, rain, bugs, sun, high altitude, extreme heights, lightning, etc...
  • The degree of strenuous activity within the job is considered to be high. Often lifting a weight of 50 pounds throughout the day is common.
  • Additional strenuous physical activity may include walking or hiking upon uneven, challenging terrain with heavy tools or equipment.


  • Exposure to: chemicals required for cleaning and de-greasing. Ultra Violet radiation from the sun. Fumes produced in cleaning activities. Noise generated by tools may require helmets to be worn.
  • Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, supervisors and other employees.
  • Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near vision and depth perception.
