Job Description
Overview

Are you a Civil Engineer who enjoys working outdoors but also has a strong desire to gain experience in structural design? If so, this position might be perfect for you! The Agency of Transportation is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated candidate for a Civil Engineer position where you would serve as a field engineer during Vermont's construction season and then as a design engineer within our Structures Design Section during the winter months.

Within the Construction Section, we provide inspection and oversight services on heavy highway construction projects, including roadway, bridge, and railroad, with the occasional rock blasting, rail trail, or even a covered bridge project. The selected candidate for this position will be assigned to a construction project to learn about some of the following during the construction season:

  • Acting as an inspector by observing, verifying, measuring, and documenting the work performed by Contractors, and making payments for acceptable work.
  • Interpreting the plans and specifications that relate to the project.
  • Construction materials sampling and testing.
  • Reviewing and checking project records and documentation.
  • Setting up and operating survey equipment, tabulating data, and performing calculations in the field.

During the winter months, the selected candidate will work directly with the Structures Design Section. Our Structures team operates at a high level of proficiency and thrives in a hybrid work environment, dedicated to fostering the growth and development of our staff.

With a focus on supporting all bridge projects within the State Highway System, our team offers an unparalleled opportunity for new members to immerse themselves in diverse projects of varying complexities. As an integral part of our design teams, you'll have the chance to engage in a wide array of projects, providing you with both breadth and depth in civil engineering. Unique to VTrans and this position in particular, there is the potential opportunity to design infrastructure and then oversee its construction.

The realm of bridge development presents a uniquely rich landscape, perfectly suited for aspiring engineers eager to gain hands-on experience in the design of structural steel and concrete components. Our work requires seamless coordination with traffic engineers, hydraulics experts, geotechnical specialists, and municipal or private utility entities.

At VTrans, we pride ourselves on providing a supportive environment that nurtures your professional growth. If you're seeking a team that offers challenging and distinctive projects alongside ample resources for career advancement, VTrans is your ideal destination. We invite prospective applicants to connect with our team members and discover firsthand why working with Structures and Construction at VTrans is such a rewarding experience.
