The Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is seeking an Aviation Maintenance Worker for the E.F. Knapp Airport in Berlin, VT.

The Maintenance Worker will operate a variety of equipment, including loaders, mowers, sweepers, graders, rollers, tractors with attachments (brush hogs, mowers, weed whackers, chain saws, etc.)
Facilities at the airport have minor items needed on a regular basis. This includes not only keeping supplies in stock for the terminal building and any operational supplies, but also some minor maintenance work for things like painting, minor carpentry, maintenance on HVAC (filter changes, etc.), water system monitoring and filling of salt and/or bleach, septic tanks for pumping.
The position must respond to all emergencies on the airport including failed aircraft operations, crashes, fires, etc. During work hours, the employee is the first on the scene in most cases. During non-work hours, they will be called in to aid in the incident. Depending on the incident the employee could be operating fire equipment, providing first aid, shutting down engines and systems of aircraft, protecting the scene for law enforcement and working with the FAA offices on how to protect the scene until their investigators can arrive.
As the only VTrans employee at the airport most of the time, the incumbent must provide general information and aid to users and the general public. Additionally, the position must monitor weather radar, read aviation weather forecasts, and weather observations to answer inquiries via radio or in person from pilots. At airports where there is a fixed base operator (FBO) the incumbent will provide training for their use of the airfield and the fuel farm.

Work is performed both in a facility and primarily in the field. Duties require exposure to extreme outdoor weather. An incumbent must be available for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies. Employees may be required to report to work outside of their work schedule and must be reachable by phone. An employee must be able to use tools and lift materials commonly used in routine maintenance work. Normal dangers associated with work on or near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and responding to accidents, emergencies and natural disasters are present. May be exposed to blood and airborne pathogens. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required. Travel throughout the state to various airports may be required. Stress may be involved in negotiating and obtaining compliance with contracts, tenants and users.
High school diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years or more of transportation maintenance or construction experience INCULDING BOTH one season or more of operating a snow plow with or without wings AND six (6) months or more of operating medium or heavy equipment, such as graders, rollers, and backhoes.
OR
One (1) year as an Airport Maintenance Worker I.
Experience in inventory or store control and lighting and electrical.
Complete Vermont State Aeronautics Training program within the first 6 months of employment.
An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation.
